Braided Scarf for the Knifty Knitter Spool Loom

Barbie loomed this version of the braided scarf pattern in blue and white hues. What a fun scarf.

Provo Craft Tools

This pattern was originally designed by Alicia Underwood and published on the Provo Craft website.

Other Supplies

  • 3 or 4 different skeins of yarn (your choice of color/style; use the Fun Fur, the regular knitting worsted yarn, or any other yarn)

Skill level: Beginner

Note: This is an easy project, and although it takes some time to make the tubes, it's worth it. To make the project go a little quicker, try using only 3 tubes instead of 5 for a scarf that isn't as bulky around the neck.

Step 1: Using the Spool Loom (the end with 5 pegs) and one strand of yarn, knit 5 tubes, each between 50" and 56" long. It is best if they are each different lengths.

Step 2: Hook the 5 tubes together as shown in the diagram (SEE DIAGRAM) and then braid them together. Then sew the tubes together using the yarn needle to ensure that they won't come undone.

Step 3: Using the Knifty Knitter Pom-Pom and Tassel Maker, put pom-poms on both ends of each tube. (The Fun Fur tube in this picture doesn't have pom-poms because Fun Fur doesn't make good pom-poms.)

The Big Purple Bag

Knifty Knitter Bag

Skill level: Intermediate

Note: This bag can be lined, but it is a great bag to go shopping with. It stretches so big that you can put a lot of packages in it. The handles are comfortable and strong enough to support a heavy load.

Step 1: Flat piece of knitting: E wrap the loom, starting with peg 2 and ending with peg 31. Turn on peg 31 and e wrap back to peg 2. Knit 16 rows in this manner. (This piece will eventually fold over the handle.)

Step 2: Main body of the bag: Use the pegs on both sides of the loom (but not the pegs on each end of the loom) to knit in the figure 8 pattern. This will hold the stitches for the next rows. Wrap back and forth (fashion stitch), and then knit these stitches over. You will knit one stitch over on one side and two stitches over one stitch on the other side.

Step 3: Using the Bernat Disco yarn (this should be at peg 2), knit in with the main yarn for the next 6 rows. Cut the Bernat Disco and continue knitting until the knitting measures 24" of the main color of yarn (end at peg 2). Add in the Bernat Disco for the next 6 rows and then cut this yarn.

Step 4: Knit one row using only the main color (this will leave you at peg 31). Take the loops from the other side of the loom and place them over the corresponding pegs in the row you just knitted. You will now have 2 loops on the pegs on the right side of the loom. Wrap back in the single stitch and knit the 2 loops over the wrapped one. Continue knitting the single stitch for 16 rows.

Step 5: Using the main color and the Spool Loom (the end with 8 pegs), knit a tube 28" to 34" long (instructions can be found in the Spool Loom packaging). You will need 2 of these tubes.

Step 6: Fold the single knitting over. Using the yarn needle and yarn, sew to make a tube to string the handles through. Sew up the sides about half way. Thread the handles through the tube. Sew the ends together and slip these sewn ends to the middle of the tube.

Step 7: Sew the sequins on with sewing thread or loops of the yarn. Sew each one on separately, so that the bag can stretch.

Knifty Knitter Spool Loom Projects

Free Patterns and Projects for the Knifty Knitter Spool Loom

Knifty Knitter Spool Loom
The first thing you should know about a spool loom is that it has 2 ends and both may be used for knitting. There is a wide end and a narrow end. Spool looms are generally used for knitting long ropes or cables. For example, the strap of a loom knitted purse is often made with the spool loom. Here are a few patterns to get you started using your Knifty Knitter spool loom, including some ideas you wouldn't expect, such as a Valentine's Day card and a scarf!

Braided Tube Scarf Pattern

for the Knifty Knitter Spool Loom

Knifty Knitter Spool Loom ScarfThis scarf is made by knitting 5 long tubes on the spool loom and braiding them together along with some fun fur. It adds depth and dimension to the finished scarf. You can experiment by mixing and matching the knitted tubes in different colors. I've seen one done in the primary blue and yellow. It was adorable. This can be a very long project for a beginner, because it takes a while to make all the tubes.

Skill Level: Beginner

You will need:

* Knifty Knitter Pom Pom and Tassel Maker
* Knifty Knitter Spool Loom
* Knifty Knitter hook
* Yarn Needle
* 3 or 4 skeins of worsted weight yarn
* fun fur

Braided Tube Scarf for the Spool Loom

 This is the Knifty Knitter spool loom by Provo Craft. If you haven't seen one, you may not realize that they have 2 sides with pegs. One end is slight smaller than the other, so you can make 2 different widths of knit on the same loom. The smaller side can also be used to make the thumb of a mitten or glove.

How to Make Felted Flowers on a Knifty Knitter Spool Loom

These flowers are knitted using wool yarn and the small end of the spool loom. They are knitted as a long tube, approximately 25 inches in length. The tube is then sewn into a flower shape, then the flower is felted. It makes a pretty embellishment for a felted tote bag, or coat pin.

You will need:
  • Spool Loom
  • Yarn Needle
  • Pattons Wool Yarn
  1. E-wrap the small end of the spool loom with only one strand of yarn.
  2. Use the no wrap stitch (seen in the video below) for the remainder of the project. Knitting circularly around the spool loom until the knit reaches 25 inches.
  3. Cut the working yarn and leave a 10 inch tail.
  4. Use a regular needle and thread to sew the tube into the shape of petals. Zig zag the tube, securing it with thread in the center. The finished flower should have roughly 5 petals.
  5. You can sew a small loop of tube into the middle for the flower center. This is how the flower appears with a tube center.
  6. Felt the flower by washing it in a washing machine and laying it flat to dry. If you have a high efficiency washing machine, check out these instructions for felting.
  7. Embellish with buttons or other items for the center.

    For step by step instructions to sew the petals in place, see the ArtMind blog. Note: the flower in these instructions is made in the same design, but using a shorter tube, as it is not to be felted.
If you desire to dye the felted flowers, check out the instructions for dying felted wool with kool aid.

Felted Bag Made with the Knifty Knitter Long Yellow Loom and Spool Loom

The finished felted bag measures approximately 16 inches by 6 inches. This pattern uses Patons Classic Wool yarn.
  1. E-wrap and knit 9 rows.
  2. Bring the first row up and over the pegs. Knit off to form a brim
  3. E-Wrap and Knit 42 more rows, changing the color of yarn as desired. (To change the color of yarn, leave a 3-4 inch tail on the yarn previous yarn and new yarn. Wrap the new yarn and knit as usual.)
  4.  Knit the last 2 rows very loosely.
  5. To finish, move all loops from one side of the loom to the other side. This closes the bottom of the bag.
  6. Use a crochet cast off to remove the last loop from the loom. (Thread a contrasting color yarn through the loops to remove them from the loom. Insert a crochet hook through the first loop that was removed from the loom. Chain the contrasting yarn through the first loop. Chain again with the contrasting yarn. Chain the contrasting yarn through the second loop. Continue until all loops have been crocheted using the chain stitch with one additional chain stitch between each loop.
  7. Use the spool loom and 2 strands of yarn to knit a tube approximately 50 inches long. Attach the tube at each edge of the bag to form a strap.
  8. Felt the bag by washing it in a machine with towels. Lay flat to dry.

Quick and Easy Tube Scarf for the Knifty Knitter Spool Loom

  1. E-Wrap the large end of the loom using one strand of yarn.
  2. Continue wrapping in a continuous clockwise motion around the loom until you have wrapped a second row.
  3. Knit off.
  4. Repeat step 2 and 3 until the scarf is 48 inches long.
  5. Sew through each loop to remove the scarf from the loom. Pull tight.
  6. Attach a pom pom to the each end of the scarf. The Knifty Knitter brand pom pom maker may be used to make pom poms.
The thin spool scarves may be worn alone or several of may be braided together to make a thicker scarf as seen in the photo above. Fun fur yarn adds an interesting look to the scarf.
