Kimono Slippers

You will need:
  • Knifty Knitter red round loom
  • Worsted weight yarn (Red Heart - Hot Pink)
  • Yarn needle
Instructions:
  1. Cast on by e wrapping all the pegs of the red loom.
  2. Change directions and wrap the loom back to the first peg as you would to knit a flat panel.
  3. Knit 16 rows.
  4. On the 17th row, knit only 19 pegs, then reverse directions and knit only 7 pegs. Continue knitting back and forth on these 7 pegs for 40 rows. (When you finish you will have what looks like a large T.)
  5. Cast off using the crochet cast off.
  6. Holding the knit as if it is a capital letter T, pull the right side of the top of the T down to the bottom and sew it in place. Repeat this bringing the left side of the capital T down to the bottom and sewing it in place where you previously sewed. This is the toe of the slipper.
  7. Sew along the sides of the slipper where it meets the bottom of the slipper.

Elmo Earflap Hat - Loom Knit

Elmo Earflap Hat
Elmo Earflap Hat

I've been working on some kid's earflap hats. I've been using a method very similar to the one in the video. She does an amazing job of explaining the process and marking the pegs for the earflaps.

I used the red round loom for an infant/toddler to make an Elmo hat. I used 2 strands of Red Heart red yarn and 1 strand of fun fur. I made the earflaps using 5 pegs on each side of the loom.

One thing I do slightly differently than the video, is after I knit the first earflap, I wrap across to the next one. After I've knitted it, I wrap back to the first earflap, so I end with one loop on the entire loom, rather than only where the earflaps are located. This prevents me from ever having to cut the yarn.

Anyway, here are photos of my Elmo hat in progress. I still need to add his face and the braids to the side of the earflaps. When I'm done with him, I have hopes of starting Cookie Monster. We love Sesame Street.

I used strands of yarn cut to about 12 inches. I thread 3 strands through each of the 3 "holes" on the earflap. (The holes are really just gaps in the stitches.) After you feed the strands through, they are folded in half, so they hang down 6 inches. I took each of the 3 yarn sections and braided them. Around the bottom of the braid, I wrapped and tied a piece of yarn to secure the braid.

For the eyes, I used 2 strands of worsted weight white yarn and knitted 6 rows on the large end of the spool loom. I stuffed each eye with 3 cotton balls. I pulled both ends of the eye closed by sewing through each loop in the row and pulling the yarn tight. Next, I sewed on black felt for the mouth and center of each eye.

For the nose, I e wrapped and knitted 7 rows from the large end of the spool loom again. I used 2 strands of worsted weight orange yarn. I did it much the same as the eyes, accept I only stuffed it with one cotton ball to give it a more elongated appearance.

I used red yarn to stitch the eyes and nose to the hat, working from the inside so the stitching doesn't show. I used black thread to stitch the felt mouth and eye centers on.

My granddaughter is not quite 2 years old, she's 22 months as I write this. The hat done on the red loom fit her, but it was a little snug. The next earflap hat that I make for her (Cookie Monster) will be knitted on the green loom, so she will have room to grow into it.

Change Purse

Knifty Knitter Change Purse InstructionsKnifty Knitter Change Purse
This purse uses fabric instead of yarn. After cutting the lining for the purse, the remaining fabric is cut into strips. These strips are used as yarn while looming. This is an interesting project if you have sewing skills and want to try something new.

Skill: Advanced

Instructions
1. Cut a square piece about 7X9 for the lining of the purse.
2. Using the rotary cutter and the mat cutter, cut the rest of the yard of fabric INTO 1 1/4"stripes on the bias. (click on bottom picture for a detailed view) This gives the fabric have a little stretch.
3. Sew the strips together on the sewing machine. (click on bottom picture for a detailed view)
4. Try to keep the fabric folded so that the right side is out it will make your project much brighter to have the right side out. You may want to iron on fold.
5. E wrap the fabric strips loosely around the pegs. I used 16 pegs and knit about 26 rows. When I fold the knit work in half it measures 4"X 7" the finished size of the purse.
6. Using the square of fabric fold it in the middle then iron about 3/4 of an inch. On the long sides and put the zipper in.
7. Sew the back side of the zipper to the right side of the fabric, and sew up the side seams. (click on bottom picture for a detailed view)
8. Hand stitch the sides of the knitted square and hand stitch the around the zipper.

Flat Top Hat Pattern

The flat top hat is flat at the top because it's finished with a horizontal seam, rather than gathered. This pattern is knitted with 2 yarns as if they are one. You can use fun fur for one of the yarns if you wish. For a small woman's hat the green round loom is used. If you like a larger hat, use the purple hat loom, or the extra large yellow loom.

  1. Knit 20 rows.
  2. Make a brim by pulling the first row up through the center of the loom. Put the loops back on the pegs. Knit.
(Now you have a double thickness brim.)
  3. Knit 20 more rows.
  4. Crochet cast off.
  5. Turn the hat inside out. Whip stitch the top closed as a flat seam, or crochet it closed as a flat seam, whichever you prefer.
  6. Tie off the yarn.
  7. Turn the hat right side out.

Christmas Stocking Pattern for the Knifty Knitter Red Round Loom

Knifty Knitter Christmas Stocking
This pattern makes a large Christmas stocking to hold plenty of toys from Santa.

What you will need:
    Knifty Knitter Christmas Stocking
  1. Using 2 strands of red yarn as if they are one, ewrap all pegs on the red loom twice.
  2. Knit a row.
  3. Ewrap one more row and knit. Continue until the knit reaches 6.5 inches.
  4. Pull the first row of knit up through the inside of the loom and place it on the pegs. Knit. (This creates a cuff on the top of the stocking.
  5. Change the yarn color to 2 strands of green. Knit 29 rows, or approximately 8 inches.
  6. The next few steps will create the heel of the stocking. Change the yarn color back to 2 strands of red. Wrap to the 15th peg. Knit. Wrap back to peg 1. Knit.
  7. Remove the loops from peg 1 and 2. Pull 2 through 1. Place the loop back on peg 2.
Remove the loops from peg 14 and 15. Pull 15 through 14. Place the loop back on peg 14.
  8. Ewrap the heel pegs and knit.
  9. Continue to decrease the width of the knit by pulling the loops at the edge of the knit through the previous loop before knitting. (Loop 2 through 3, and loop 13 through 14.) When you've done this 3 times, you will have 3 empty pegs on each side.
  10. With the remaining 9 pegs, knit four rows.
  11. Now, you'll begin to add stitches, or increase stitch. Each time you knit to the end of a row, add a stitch to an empty peg. When you've done this six times, all the empty pegs will be filled.
  12. Using the green yarn, knit 27 more full rounds.
  13. Change to the red yarn and knit 10 rows. This is the toe of the stocking.
  14. Run the working yarn through all the loops on the loom to remove them one by one. Pull the working yarn tight to cinch closed the toe of the stocking. Tie off the yarn.
  15. Turn the stocking inside out and use the remaining yarn to stitch the two sides of the heel closed.
